Saluting Battery & The Time Gun
Built in 1566, the Saluting Battery is Malta’s ancient ceremonial platform, from where gun salutes are fired throughout the year to mark state occasions, national holidays and to greet visiting naval ships to the island. Between Monday and Saturday, a time gun is fired at 12.00 (noon) to mark the passage of midday, and again at 16.00, as it was done for centuries until commercial clocks became the norm in the 20th century. Given its unique location, the Saluting Battery went on to have many public uses:
- Firing of the minute guns during state funerals
- Sounding of the general alarm in case of an invasion
- Signalling of sunrise and sunset
- Indicating the opening and closing time of the town gates
MEET360 Events promotes the shooting of the time gun for exclusive, private, corporate events.
The ceremony can be preceded or followed by drinks and snacks, served from the Saluting Battery, and overlooking the magnificent Grand Harbour and the Three Cities.
